Breast reconstruction surgery is performed in women who have lost a portion or all of one or both of their breasts due to cancer or trauma. Reconstruction surgery can be performed immediately following the mastectomy procedure, or it can also be performed even years after the original surgery.
This is a 59 year-old woman who underwent right breast mastectomy for recurrent breast cancer. The picture on the left was taken immediately before she had her entire right breast surgically removed. The picture on the right shows her final results after she had breast reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi muscle flap and silicone implant. She also had the nipple recreated. To achieve balance and better symmetry, the other breast was surgically lifted.
